Why so slow, AmeriCorps NCCC Livejournal Community?

I created this account just to ponder why the board has been so slow. I enjoy reading people's discussions on here. I /really/ enjoyed reading past discussions of people from XV being all nervous together. I kind of want that while I'm in applying for AmeriCorps! I think a reason for the decline is due to facebook's page, but since I deactivated my facebook this month, I can't really participate.

Anyway, I have applied to Winter 2011 for NCCC. I'm Alex Felt. Anybody else down to revive this community's inactivity? :)

Comments

Let's do it! I would love to help revive it. I just applied for Winter 2011, too!! I'm Caity.

I still have a facebook and the group and page are kind of... slow, as well. Not as bad as this, but still rather slow. It's kind of sad.
Yes! I'm super glad someone responded. Hey Caity! Where are you from and where are you hoping to get sent to? I am almost positive the three campuses available are PerryPoint, Maryland; Vinton, Iowa; and Vicksburg, Mississippi. I think my #1 is Maryland, then Mississippi, then Iowa. Yeah I participated a bit on the FB board and it was kind of slow, and sometimes I go back into my account just to check on AmeriCorps, but I have so much more free time away from facebook that I want to stay away. Although, I probably will reactivate my account if/when I get accepted so that I can actively participate in the groups specifically for campus'. Agh I just can't stop reading blogs and all the comments here and everything! I need to have a group of people to chat with.
Do you know anyone who is applying in real life? I know 4 people who plan on it, but only 1 person has finished their application so far, and it was because I made them (Californian laid back slackers!). 2 of them are applying to be TLs. 1 of them is a returner.

Basically, I'm just dyyying for news to speed up. Also, I have a blog I'm starting on blogspot to document all my AmeriCorps related activity:
alexfelt.blogspot.com

Okay, I'll leave this at that, because this is toooo long.
Hey, I'm Tai! I just joined this community and haven't applied... yet. My plan is to do so once I graduate from college (hopefully Fall 2011.)

How much in advance should I apply if I want to participate in the Fall 2012 cycle?

:)
Hi, Tai! I think you should apply as early in advance as possible. I believe that means about a year before the cycle would start? So you have a whole year ahead of you and then some before you should really worry about it. But you should definitely stick around and lurk and maybe read some blogs on the beforehand of you applying. What are you majoring in?
Awesome, thanks for the tip. And no worries, I definitely plan on lurkin' here to find out more about everybody's experiences!

I'm a English lit. major with a minor in film. I really love what I study but I'm ready to get out of school for a while.
That's kinda how I feel at the moment. Except I'm still doing a bunch of general ed that I don't enjoy as much, I overall really like school so it's all good. But I'm psyched for my gap year.
I think Livejournal in general has dwindled in popularity. By my senior year of college for instance, my college's community was totally inactive, and right before my Freshman year, it was buzzing with people.

But I personally like the relative anonymity of lj. I didn't join the Facebook group for my class before I got there--I wanted to wait to meet everyone in real life!

I don't have much else to say on here, but I'm willing to answer questions.
I think that's definitely true. It's just a shame to see because I really like how the community here seemed back just 2 years ago. I'd like to revive some of that spirit for some Winter 2011ers that I can have the camaraderie with.
alex felt, as in victoria felt?!?!?!
AS IN HER LITTLE SISTER
cool, its kara from oregon. thats cool youre doing americorps
WAIT YOU ARE KARA!!!!!!!!! KARA! How exciting. I just read your journal, and I saw you mentioned being from Oregon, and then I kept lurking for some nouns like 'victoria' or 'kara' to pop out and then I saw when you came back to Eugene and mentioned Buddy and I was like WOO!
Okay hey. Yes, I'm applying for AmeriCorps for Winter 2011 this year. :) I'm psyched. How are you?
ha, just saw this! im pretty good, i just moved back to oregon from new orleans. Do you know what campus you'll be at? what have you been up to?

(Anonymous)

I'm hoping for Maryland, but Winter 2011 acceptances won't start happening for another few months, so I have no idea what campus I'll be on, or even if I'll get in. I'm optimistic, though. Are you living in Eugene again?
I'd love to help revive the group! I've participated some on the Americorps Facebook, but I think it would be fun to meet other people here on LJ.

I go by Beauty online and sometime in real life. (It's become almost like a real name for me.) I applied a few months ago and just had my interview on the 11th. I am now waitlisted and waiting on my packet from them.
Ah, we're in the same boat then! My interview was the 10th, and I'm also waiting on a packet from them. We should both post when we receive ours so that the other person could expect theirs around the same time since we're so close to each other in the process. What state do you live in, Beauty?
Good idea! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow, but I doubt it. I'm just so impatient.

I'm from Missouri, and from what I've heard, they send you to the furthest campus away, so my fingers are crossed for Maryland.
Yeah they like to have people as far away from what they know as possible. One of these reasons is because people are less likely to quit if they're further away from home. Isn't that interesting? I think everybody is keeping their fingers crossed for Maryland. But Mississippi would also be excellent I think. :)
I'm also hopeful for tomorrow, but whooo knows.
I've lived in the South and in the Midwest, but never in New England, so that's my ulterior motive for going up there. That, and I've driven through there once before and it was rather beautiful during the fall. I'd like to go up there again. Plus most of the cities are so close to each other in New England, and those would make great weekend trips, and even greater places to go for Independent Service Projects.

Let's keep our fingers crossed for sometime this week at least. I had a bad dream a couple days ago where I got my packet. It was posted-marked a couple of days before I received it, but the letter inside was well-past the ten day mark and I freaked out.
Nothing yet from here. And yes, I want to see all the beauty that is up in the northeast. I've never been, but I've seen pictures and it just appeals to me so much. Plus, I would love to do couch-surfing over summer vacation while I'm there so I can explore the areas I haven't been sent.

Also, what a horrible dream. I worry that, from being a Californian when the stuff is sent from D.C., that I have less time than most people to get my stuff in because the distance is greater than most other states.
Nothing from me either.

And that is something I didn't think about before! That would make me worry too, but I'm sure you'll get it in time.
Yeah I'm not /too/ concerned, but I'll probably have a day or two less in the 10 day period. But I know I'll get it doen and mailed by the next day. :P
I got mine today finally! Did you get yours?
Yes I did! I'm pretty sure though we're talking both on here and on Facebook. xD
Haha I guess because your icon and name on here as Beauty it has left me thinking you're a separate person!
A revival sounds like fun. I have my interview in...13 hours or so. I'm so fricking nervous.

My name's Alyx by the way. Or at least that's what I go by.
Good luck Alyx! I'm sure you'll do fine. I think what is most important is to show that you know what you're getting yourself into, as well as show that you have a real drive for this. The rest doesn't matter that much, I think, because there is no one right answer since they want a diverse group of people in NCCC anyway.
Thanks! I hope so. I'm really excited and can't wait to actually go so I hope I get in. Where are you from? I'm from Missouri like Beauty.
California. :) I've only really traveled around the west coast and Montana, so I can't wait for any place really, because it'll all be new and exciting for me.
Same here. I've mainly stayed in the midwest. Only ever been to Illinois, Nebraska, Texas once, and DC once but I didn't get a chance to see much of the city. I would rather go to the west coast as opposed to the east coast, but anything works for me as long as I don't end up in Iowa. x.x
Do you think you might even consider deferring if you got into Iowa?
I don't know. I guess it would still be a good experience, but Ive been in this area my entire life and I'm quite sick of it.
Yeah, I understand that. Well from reading what people are saying, Iowa isn't for sure for Winter 2011, and even Vicksburg isn't certain. The only certain one is Perry Point (everyone's favorite!).

How was your interview, by the way?
Okay I think. Still waiting to see if I was waitlisted. I swear I've checked the website like 20 times today. The wait is killing me. I've never been a patient person.
Yeah it took 5 days for me to get waitlisted. And the more I think about AmeriCorps, the slowly the wait goes.
I hope this kicks up activity... I left livejournal for a year or so and it seems like it's gone down in activity all around. I hope that's not a facebook thing :(

I love NCCC. Western region class umm I graduated August of '08 :P

Same situation

I have the exact same situation. i applied for NCCC Winter 2011 and have been waitlisted and i'm now just waiting for the packet to arrive. any idea how long that should take? because i got the email 5 days ago and the packet still hasn't arrived.... sort of worried haha

Re: Same situation

The waitlist packet that includes your finger printing and medical card? It took me a couple weeks, I think.
And if you've already turned that in and have had your stuff check out, then... Well, unfortunately we're playing the waiting game until probably a month or two or even possibly three months from now. No one has been accepted yet, and being waitlisted means you have been qualified for everything else from the application process and your chances are just as likely as anyone elses. It can take up to 6 weeks to get anything in the mail that you are expecting from them, but things are generally received within 3 weeks.

who else is in?

hey guys. i found out a little while ago that i was accepted to the maryland group, i only thought of now, looking for other fellow team mates and members. i deactivated my facebook a while ago, so i was glad to find this LJ group. it looks pretty dead since the summer, but i hope we can reboot it. ............so how about it? who else is in? and where are you stationed?

Re: who else is in?

I'm also going to Maryland! You should reconsider getting back onto facebook if you want to communicate more with team members. There's 9 others who are on facebook and involved in a group there where we talk about our upcoming year. So far there's been few others accepted-- only one round has happened. But you should consider going back to communicate, especially if any questions arise.

But yeah! I don't think that this board will be very busy in the next few months, unfortunately.
